‘A
welcoming place for the whole community’ was the brief. The
site is located in the World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall.
Corner blocks are re-built
with lime mortar and the existing bricks re-used and wrapped around a super warm
timber frame. The inserted fifth element is covered in an external
mesh which controls the light, view and solar gain to the building
and is LED-lit at night. Clay from the basement excavation will help
create a massive rammed earth wall and community-made earth blocks.
The 8000 sqm site has been
designed to enhance the flora and fauna utilising a ‘permaculture’
approach: encouraging diversity
